Album Review: Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell

By: Kendall | in: Music | 6 Comments

Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell

Tokyo Police Club follows up two EP’s with Elephant Shell, their first full length release for Saddle Creek Records. The album is a great follow-up, directly related musically, to their first release A Lesson in Crime. The instruments and the uneasy/desperate feel remain the same, but they do seem to have taken on a bit of the milder Saddle Creek somberness. Don’t let that fool you into thinking this could, in any way, be a lesser record for it. It clocks at about 28 minutes with 11 tracks and it can still rock. “Your English is Good” is a spacious bass led track, clicked out by drum sticks hitting one another. “Tessellate” is up beat, hand-clappy, and led into a hi-hat keyboard stomping into a keyboard hook. “Graves” lends itself to a garage rock rant reminiscent of the strokes first album. When it’s time to bring things down a notch “The Harrowing Adventures of…” is a welcome break, with cello crooning you to keep it light, while the xylophones prance their way through the song to spike your interest. Listen to the Math is another more down tempo track that drops most of the jagged guitars and replaces them with a light picked melody, and less angular chords. The drums are loaded with reverb, and are almost the main instrument in the verse sections.

If there is a happy medium between art rock, and post-punk pop, Tokyo Police Club have found it. They don’t need to follow the normal ABABCB pop dredges, but manage to make you want to sing along, get up and dance, and give them your vote. Another interesting thing is how disinterested a vocal can sound, and still lend itself to such melody. A lot of the background vocals are group yelling, giving it a close relation to Bang Camaro at times. Overall if you are fan of the previous EP’s Tokyo Police Club will not disappoint. There is just enough variety to keep it interesting, and they keep close enough to where they started to not lose any fans, and will be sure to gain new ones.

Crystal Antlers

By: Yaya | in: Music | 2 Comments

A year from now I promise you won’t be able to avoid the name of Crystal Antlers, whom you’re going to declare the world’s coolest band. Don’t forget where you first heared about them. I found their MySpace page yesterday and they totally blew me away. The Antlers are a 5 piece band from the west coast and that’s about all I know regarding their bio.

Those who’ve been talking to me lately probably heard the name Comets On Fire a couple of times. That’s mainly because I recently bought their 2006 masterpiece Avatar and my life hasn’t been the same since. It was then that I discovered that one of the people I adore in the music world today is Ben Chasney, a.k.a Six Organs Of Admittance, is actully playing guitar in Avatar and does an amazing job (as usual, what’s new). The other reason I like Comets On Fire that much is Ethan Miller, the band’s lead vocalist and one of the best throats in the world today (next to, of course, Jim James). Speaking of Miller - a new album for Howlin’ Rain is out and it sounds fantastic!

Crystal Antlers

And what does all that has to do with the Crystal Antlers? thanks for reading my blurbs so far. Johnny Bell (bass/lead vocals) is sort of a new Ethan Miller/Jim James, yes, the world is enhancing with good throats. The Crystals combine bad-ass energies with a great joy soaked in fuzz, they keep their songs tight but still maintain a great freedom feeling. There’s always the psych-rock oriented keyboard (played by Victor Rodriguez) sound in the back, while drummer Kevin Stuart and Bell on bass, are providing the space for Andrew King on guitars to breath threw this guitar sounds and parts.

What I heard on their MySpace page, the amazing combination of psychedelic rock in the Comets style with the freedom vibe of early Mercury Rev records, completley blew me away. They’re gonna make it, big time. I just hope they’ll remember what I wrote about them and will give me a free backstage pass to mingle with them.

Song of the Week - April 18

By: Rustycat | in: Music | 11 Comments

Deus Live

Every other week each of our writers shares the song that made his/her week just a little bit brighter.

Kendall
You, Me, & The Bourgeoisie by The Submarines
Lo-fi, ultra poppy girl singer. Xylophones. Beatles reminiscent tones and piano stabs. How could it be bad? Do do do do do do….you’ll be singing along too!

Charbarred
Oh Your God by dEUS
I caught dEUS live a couple of days ago. It was the third time I saw them and I really can’t think of a better live band. Their new album ships in a couple of weeks and if that’s not enough to get you excited, nothing is.

D Thompson
Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Back when I was still buying everything on vinyl, because CD was still just part of the alphabet, I didn’t much care for Nick Cave’s band The Birthday Party. When that band fell apart and Nick resurfaced as Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds I didn’t care about them either. It wasn’t untill I bought a soundtrack that contained his fantastic “Red Right Hand” that I cared about Nick in the least. Now, after digging about a bit, I realize what a fool I was. And, NOW, Nick and his Bad Seeds have put out a first-rate album called Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!! of which this is the equally first-rate title track. Don’t make the same mistake I did! Pay attention to Nick Cave!

Mistaken for Strangers by The National
I know these guys are last year’s talk of the blog sphere but I must admit I missed out on them and I’m only getting on board now. This is an amazing album I especially like Mistaken for Strangers, it’s got everything the band represents. Is it just me or does the open riff remind you of a Sonic Youth track?
