Rusty’s Pandora Box: 2009 Kicks Off with Amazing Albums
By: Rustycat | in: Music |Here’s a round up of all the great music and new albums I’ve been listening to this past month. I’ll keep the wording short and the music long.
You can always drop by my last.fm profile and look at what I’m listening to…add me as a friend.
De Rosa - Stillness
Album: Prevention
Glasgow based De Rosa’s new album, Prevention, out on March 3rd is one of the most refreshing albums as a whole I’ve heard lately. I just received a copy of the album from their distributors and I’m sure it’s one of those albums who will be talked over the blogsphere if it’s not already.
Say Hi - One, Two….One
Album: Oohs and Aahs
Buy CD on Amazon (out March 3rd)
Another great new album from indie rockers Say Hi. I think this track captures its best moments.
The Decemberists - Sleepless
Album: Dark Was The Night Compilation
Buy MP3 on Amazon
You have to be living under a rock not to have heard about the new indie compilation released this week from the same people who brought us the amazing NO Alternative back in the 90’s. Dark Was the Night compiled by the folks of The National (another great band) has a list of extensive indie band and collaborations that are a must for all indie fans out there. All the proceeds go to the Red Hot organization for AIDS relief, so buy the CD!
For me, one specific track stands out and it’s by The Decemberists. I’ve never been a big fan but this song just grabbed me from first listen it has the foundation of a great folk 60’s tune but also feels like a big rock ballad from the 80’s for some reason. Perfect song as far as I’m concerned.
Phantom Band - The Howling
Album: Checkmate Savage
Another good band from the same label as De Rosa, Chemikal Underground Records home to the likes of Mogwai, The Delgados and Arab Strap. This one is a bit more Gothic for all you 80’s fans but still at par with the present.
Fire on Fire - Sirocco
Album: The Orchard
This is probably my favorite of the bunch. Folk rock with banjos and great guitars - a must listen. If you like what you hear check out the lead man, Micah Blue Smaldone’s solo album ‘The Red River’ for more acoustic material. Very Neil Youngish..
16 Horsepower - I Seen What I Saw
Album: Live March 2001
16 Horsepower are my long time favorites. They released a live album not so long ago in 2008. I just got it and a great live DVD - if you were a fan get live CD - if you’re not, start being one.
Ghost of Tom Joad - Through Every Horn
Album: Matterhorn
Charbarred brought these guys to my attention. German based The Ghost of Tom Joad have truly great crafted rock tunes that remind me of The National or British Sea Power. That being said, the album still lacks a bit of raw power but is still worth the listen. I think this is another band to watch out for in the near future.

Hmm…Fire on Fire, I always mistook them for another band that has Fire in its name so never listened to them…good stuff.
Sounds a bit like The Tallest Man on Earth:

Fire on Fire is actually somekind of a supergroup, assembeled by members of the brilliant Cerberus Shoal (that later shrank to Caleb and Coleen only and became the weird-folk duo - Big Blood), together with the wonderful
rag-time pioneer Micah Blue Smaldone (whom, I recommend you all, to check everything the guy released so far - absolutley brilliant). They all live in the same house in Portland, Maine, a pleace that has a very strong weird-new-americana scene.
Other band with ‘fire’ is the might Comets On Fire, which is a brilliant band, but totally unrelated to the folky style.
I would add to the list, the new collection of previously unreleased/longtime out of print pieces by Ben Chasny (aka Six Organs Of Addmitance).
And the Phantom Band…well, this is probably one of the most brilliant records to be released this year.
I agree Comets on Fire are brilliant.
I was actually referring to Friendly Fires:
