Song of the “Three Weeks Ago”
By: Charbarred | in: Music |Those who’ve been following The Plugg know that we usually run this thing called “Song of the Week” every now and then. Three weeks ago I reached out to our writers and friends and they sent me their favorite tracks. Life (and work) got in the way so I finally present to you Song of the “Three Weeks Ago“. (think of it as a time capsule).
We’re honored to have guest bloggers Ekko from Berkeley Place and Ryan of the RSL Blog.

Jon Langford and Kat Ex - Do You?
I’m picking this song partly out of feeling guilty–in my picks for album of the year, I didn’t fit in the Katjon band’s debut, which was an extraordinary Clash-like rootsy rock and roll record. This song is also a Holiday song, though, so it serves two purposes. I love the way it builds and sounds instantly familiar, like the first time you wear your favorite coat.

Waking Lights - Sharks
This is an example of a great musical convergence. Waking Lights form a cluttered but comfortable musical landscape with a 6 piece band. “Sharks” is on their debut EP Songs for Jo, and is suitable lead to introduce a band that could go a long ways.

Vivian Darkbloom - Jamie
One of the hottest bands in New England right now is Boston’s Vivian Darkbloom. Our friend Rob Morris is the brain behind the three piece - he writes the songs and plays a wicked custom wii-mote guitar. The customized guitar allows every simple movement of the guitar to be translated into specific pre-programmed effects. Silly Good! Vivian Darkbloom self-released an EP that they practically gave away this year. New songs are on the way. New Songs, including Jamie - available on The Plugg today for a limited time. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Nine Inch Nails - 14
Earlier this year Trent Reznor released a whopping huge pile of instrumental bits and pieces called Ghosts for next to nothing as an internet download. Many complained it was “too much music”. As IF! This is the coolest instrumental I’ve heard in ages and one of my candidates for best song of 2008.

Flobots - Handlebars
I guess Linkin Park ruined it for everyone. If you want to mix hip hop with rock you’re in big trouble nowadays. Flobots prove that you can still do it and actually convey a message. All that, and without the need for Boyband melodies, 90’s video game backing tracks and needless self importance. Fun and powerful at the same time.

Kings of Leon – Closer
I was a big fan of KOL back in the day when their first album came out and I have to admit I never followed through on their later work until the ‘Only by Night’ release came out last September. The opening song ‘Closer’ tells it all – it has a little of everything that the album will later lay out to the listener. A touch of 90’s alternative, that “big” rock 70’s like sound, those rugged vocals of the indie world and a perfect groove to finish it off. Bottom line it’s a perfect rock track – listen and listen fast (if you haven’t already that is).
So what’s your song of the week?

I had missed song of the week. Glad its back..
NEW SONGS…YESSSSS..well maybe not so new songs..YESSSSSS…okay, so they are 3 weeks old, maybe not so new but always worth a listen. This little column has been missing for far to long from my life….so who to blame? Whilst I ponder the cosmological ramifications of blame assignment I can at least reflect upon the sonic sweets presented to us…mmmmmm tasty. The most tastiest were the Flobots song and Vivian Darkbloom song. As for releasing “too much music”..its always too much when it sucks. As my good friend The Oracle once said “I would have thought you would have figured that out by now.”
And in honor of things that may suck, here’s what I have listening to as of late
