Song of the Week - April 27

By: Charbarred | in: Music |

Mumpsy
Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his week just a little bit brighter…

This week’s guest is frequent commenter and all around great guy, Mozzer. You can recognize Mozz by his wicked cool Ray-Bans and striking resemblance to Steve Buscemi. His taste in music, and web sites, is unequaled. It’s possible his taste in clothes is really good too, and the women, oh man, don’t get me started on that!

Alibastard
“The Emperor” by Mumpsy
Subdued junkie dance euphorium. My taste tends to gravitate towards slightly more experimental realms, but Jeff Igenfritz’s opener for his concept-album-of-sorts “3 People” stuck around with me all week, just as spring was showing its first feathers. I went driving with the top down, that sunlight all over me…or at least I imagined that would be fun alongside the tamburine rattle, the synth riff. This is a song that could easily be a radio hit, and be no less infectious, and lose nothing as a somehow resonant mythologizing of some OD’ed kid playing Emperor as a drug dealer. The cover photo is great.

RustyCat
The Thief & The Heartbreaker” by Alberta Cross
Charbarred sent me their CD with a note saying “Start from this song, you’ll thank me for it”. So I did…With echoes of Neil Young (there always has to be something Neil Young related on SOTW), these UK folksters really rocked my week. Thanks Charbarred.

Mozzer Mozzer
Dr. Bones” by Cherry Poppin’ Daddies
Let’s take a visit to the “swing revival” of late 90’s. Brash and irreverent, the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies reveled in their skewed view of life, women, and relationships. Lead singer Steve Perry never shied away from peppering his lyrics with swearing and slang from the original swing era. Believe it or not, this eight-piece combo is still alive and kicking, with a new album planned for release this fall.
My song of the week is the first CPD track I ever heard, and has remained a favorite of mine thoughout the years. With a relentless tempo and kick-ass horn arrangement, Dr. Bones is a rip-roaring, delirious performance.

Kendall
Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show
Normally I pick something new as my song of the week, but today there was an undeniable choice for me as I’ve listened to it about 100 times. Old Crow Medicine is one of the revival bands out that that stays 100% true to the music they are bringing back. When you hear OCMS, they are hardcore blue grass down to the old time harmonies. It’s phenomenal to see such young guys taking to their roots so strongly.

Shrir Lior
Bang” by Drowning Girl
I’ve been listening to this group on and off now for about a week since their manager, Bonnie Fedrau of SoStarStruck!, introduced me to their Canadian brand of bitch slapping Rock ‘n’ Roll. If you liked Garbage back in the day, this may turn you on. Drowning Girl (formerly known as HiLL), makes my week with a pelvis jerking track - Bang!

D Thompson
Apollo [Adam Goldstein Edit]” by Cujo
My tax returns came in this week and I found myself with a modest windfall. So, as per my plans of over a year ago, part of said government largesse went towards my very first iPod. Yeah, yeah, stop laughing. My spiffy, shiny (and I’ve discovered, easily scratched) 30GB black iPod is my current toy du jour that accompanies me on my nightly “you’re a fat slob so do something about it” walk. As such, I’ve re-discovered a pleasure I knew about back in the days of actual cassette playing Walkmen. Namely, that some songs are really nice to walk to. I have a few favorites right now but “Apollo [Adam Goldstein Edit]” is the one the song shuffle played just last night. Cujo is actually Brazillian drum and bass meister Amon Tobin and why he needed to become “Cujo” to put out music that basically sounds like every other thing he does is beyond me. But, it’s great to walk to.

Charbarred
Emo Philips by Arrah and the Ferns
It wasn’t until I watched a live video of Arrah and the Ferns that I really warmed up to them. No bass, quirky yet genius guitars, lyrics that read like a MySpace comment stream and some “rap” in the end of the song. What else can you ask for?

So what’s your song of the week?

I got this Mumpsy CD a few months ago in the mail. Only problem was that it was an un-labeled CDR. I took it to my car and had a listen. A few days later when I wanted to re-visit it, I realized that it’s in my glove compartment among 40 other unmarked CD’s and I have no way to locate it. Since then once a week I listen to one of those unmarked CD’s in hopes that one of them will end up being Mumpsy.

really good diverse selection today folks….the deliciously quirky Arrah and the Ferns was close to getting my vote..I liked the no bass but thought when the rap started the could have added some bass and made that last section so infectious. Now before I listen to any of the tracks I always read the reviews, trying to predict which song I will like best..this week I thouhgt it would be “The Emperor” by Mumpsy and indeed it was my fav until i heard the rousing chorus of “The Thief & The Heartbreaker” by Alberta Cross…there’s something to good about that groove accompanied with a multitude of voices…so for the chorus alone that’s my song of the week.

My song of the week though is a much more dance orientated affair….full of sequenced vocals samples..like a modern Jean-Michel Jarre meeting a groove and a vocal that just wants to transport you to a hypnotic state and it demands to be played so so loud!!!

@remixboy, your song of the week sounds so exciting, but what is it?

  4. Giovanna on April 27th, 2007 7:36 am

Outstanding picks this week…it’s hard to choose which one is the best.
First of all, hat off to “Mr Pink”…apart from his avatar (reason which would be sufficient to prostrate before him in veneration, actually), his swing track is great.
D Thompson will never surprise me enough, that song by Cujo is loop-playing in my head…I enjoy its sound drum and base slowing evolving to lounge… thanks for sharing!
And Alibastard always comes with unforgettable tracks…this is his best pick ever, in my opinion! I love it! :)
    So far sooooooo good.

What a varied and eclectic mix this week. Mumpsy and Alberta Cross were great! I really enjoyed those two. btw, Arrah is cute! the song was pretty good too, but c’mon, get a bass player already. ;)

Giovanna, thanks for the kind words. One these days I hope to be as graceful and poetic with my words as you. :)

All in all, these are great songs to absorb this weekend. Happy Friday!

Wow, Alibastard, that Mumpsy song was really good. So poppy, but in such a good non-sugary way. Just fantastic.
Mozzer! The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies! I have that CD. I should say, I forgot I have that CD! Thanks for reminding me. My personal favorite was always “Drunk Daddy”.
Another great week where I liked every song.
And remixboy: AAAAUUUGGHHHH! (translation: What is your song called?)

Cool tune Ryan, I never took this guy seriously because of his name (yeah I know, shallow), but I’ll give him proper listen.

  12. DThompson on April 27th, 2007 9:02 pm

But “Arrah and the Ferns”, there’s a name you can get serious about! :)

I went to the Gym today and forgot to take the Cujo track with me…now I have to wait another week (yeah, I’m lazy) to test it out while walking.
