Song of the Week - August 31
By: Rustycat | in: Music |
Every other week each of our writers shares the song that made his/her week just a little bit brighter…
Danielle
Replay by Maria Taylor
I remember Charbarred wrote a blurb on the site before her CD was released and I finally picked it up. So freaking good, good, good. I’ve been rotating between her and Bat for Lashes, Fur and Gold CDs, respectively. Shout out to The Plugg – I have heard so much good music since I became part of the team. I’m loving it! All things combined – lyrics, music, instrumentals = kick a**.

Chelsea Song #2 by Dead Heart Bloom
The band described this song as “running the gamut, capable of sudden turns, from Sea Change-era Beck to Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys.” That sounds about right but most importantly both the self-titled record and new LP are available in their entirety
for free on their website.

Forget About Your Bones by BC Camplight
I love songs that change tempos. This is a strange tune from a strange album, but I’m really into it. With lyrics like “your mother is sweet, she smells your laundry”, I can’t really resist this charming tune. This is almost like children’s music but with with dark undertones.
Mozzer
Valerie by Mark Ronson feat. Amy Winehouse
Here’s a cover that reminds of a brisk noontime stroll though the city. The Zutons’ hit is given the Motown treatment by producer Mark Ronson. Amy Winehouse guests on vocals and completes this uptempo, soulful romp.

Little Bit of You In Everything by The Rentals
It seems like you are either a Rentals nut or you are not. Chances are if you are a fan, you’ve already purchaced their new The Last Little Life EP. I bought it and listened to it, and somehow forgot I bought it. Only to rediscover it again after about 2 weeks. I have been listening to this song repeatedly all week.

$F-Oldin’ Money covered by The Fall
To say The Fall aren’t for everyone is the underest of understatements; they have a style and sound all their own. Here they cover Tommy Blake’s $F-Oldin’ Money. Ahh, the very archetype of shambling modern rockapunkabilly cool.

Harder Better Faster Stronger by Daft Punk
So get this, last week someone sent me this video with the title “Groovy Dancing Girl”. I really don’t know what makes these viral “hits” what they are but I’ve been watching this over and over again since, not only is this girl a really good dancer but the song is awesome…it just works - watch it!
Alibastard
I’ve Got Mine by Animal Collective
I really don’t want to say anything about this song. Minimize the window, or look out your actual window, or look at a picture of your family and listen to the lyrics. Summer peacibly dwindles, hangs by such a thread. Hold on.
So what’s your song of the week?

Hey guys,
great songs this week, I especially like Lee’s choice, they sound really good.
Have a great weekend!
I really like that Daft Punk track and have seen similar videos of fans acting out that song, but that one’s pretty cool. I absolutely adore that Animal Collective track. I will be seeing them play in Boston next week. Can’t wait to the album comes out - I have a bunch of the leaked tracks, but want to listen to them back-to-back as intended. The Mark Ronson with Amy Winehouse is excellent. I didn’t know that was a Zutons song! Coolness. Did you know that Mark Ronson will be doing an artist-approved remix of a Dylan song on the new collection he releases? Just listened to Under the Radar - nice happy music… kind of reminded me of the Turtles.
Cheers all!
Daft Punk, always. How could one not possibly love French touch?
Rusty, that video was fanfreakintastic. I wonder if you have already come across this video (I am sure you have, but it’s definitely worth re-watching anyway):

“Around the world”. The choreography just glues your eyes on the screen and before you even notice you are already dancing and dancing.
And what about Planet Funk? Cool stuff of the same kind…Plus, they are Italian! *proud look*

Mozzer, that song Valerie’s got a rhythm that just won’t quit! That’s some sweet tune, put a smile on my face.
Charbarred, I don’t know if you organize our songs in any specific order, but I thought this week’s lineup led very nicely, one to the next, the way a well-considered mix tape does. So, if you do choose an order… Well done, sir!
Thanks D! Actually I did this week’s SOTW, Char is away on vacation…he deserves some time off too
fyi, Lee’s song (Chelsea Song #2) is by Dead Heart Bloom….
My apologies, Rusty, a tip of the hat to your song-ordering prowess!
I’m a little late to the party, but here goes…
Maria Taylor’s always a joy. I liked Chealsea Song. Reminded me of the Beatles, actually.
Forget about your Bones was different, but memorable. The Rentals! I havent heard them since “Friends of P” back in the day. Loved “Little bit of you…”. I must have that one! $F-Oldin’ Money is rockin’! I’ve seen groovey dancing girl before, mesmerising, and you can never go wrong with Daft Punk.
The Animal Collective tune is everything Alibastard described. Perfect for a Sunday morning or late night drive home.
Great stuff.
Thanks Chauncy, my bad…
Rusty
Awesome choices guys
Danielle, thanks for that…I also did a gig review of Maria Taylor. If you ever get a chance to see her live, don’t miss it, it’s a real treat.
Great discovery Lee, I really liked that tune.
Moz, Mark Ronson always churns out awesome covers…it’s one of those songs that have been played to death in the UK (The Zutons version), but the update is quite welcome.
It’s always great to hear The Rentals. I actually got this EP a while back and forgot about it as well…back to the playlist though.
D, I’m one of those non-fall fans, but this one is quite nice. I like hearing individual Fall tunes but the hearing a whole album is a bit daunting for me.
(whoo, I could’ve written a new article by now)
Rusty, nice choice, I liked the dancing and the music.
Ali, Animal Collective stuff is always recorded in a very weird way, so it’s cool to get a stripped down version of a song to put things in perspective. I actually went back to listening to their album after watching this video.
