Song of the Week - Blogger Special

This week we decided to take a well deserved break from offering our favorite songs. Instead, we asked our fellow bloggers to share their picks of the week. With such an esteemed panel of experts, you can’t really go wrong…

Thin Ice by Aaron English
My song of the week is a tremendously talented singer and piano player named Aaron English. English released a new album (highly recommended record!) earlier this year called “The Marriage of the Sun and Moon” - which is one of my dark horse favorites for new record of the year. His sound ranges across the oceans and high above the mountain tops.
It has been five years since English’s first release, All the Waters of This World, which was released in May 2002. I didn’t know English’s music back then, but I certainly do now and and very interested in where he is headed. His sound is similar to Peter Gabriel and that comparison is not made often. This is music for communicating with one’s own soul.

Bratach Bana (White Banners) by Mouth Music
I discovered the band Mouth Music almost by accident. I was in one of those large bookstore/coffee shop/music stores looking for something different. With a vocal quality that reminds me of Clannad, Mouth Music (Talitha MacKenzie and Martin Swan) performs with a mix of celtic vocals with a strong tribal beat. Yes, I said celtic, or should I say Gaelic? The vocals are in Gealic but the liner notes are all in English.

Speed of the Sound of Loneliness by John Prine
I don’t like to pick favorites but if I was forced to choose my all-time favorite musician it would be John Prine. This is one of those songs that cuts straight through me and I can never listen to it just once. His lyrics are always incredible but the title of this song alone says more than most entire albums by other artists.

You Made Me Like It by 1990s
Imagine yourself in a small but trashed house party. Complete with beer drenched walls, garbage flung about, and a wide variety of people, smells and clothing also filling the place. Now, imagine that you have had about half a dozen of your favorite drinks.
This song is the soundtrack to the scene I have just described, and it comes from the Glasgow trio 1990s. It’s probably worth putting on should you ever find yourself in a similar environment.

Rose by Nathan Baldwin
I am a sucker for the underdogs. I guess that is why I still check out indie bands and song writers from totally unknown realms. ‘Rose’ is a song which just came to me as it was passed around some friend’s mobile music players. Sung and written by Nathan Baldwin, little of which is known, this song kinda reminds me of my high school days where infatuation turns teenagers into instant song writers. This song made my week as I got the chance to accidentally cross paths with friends from college. The raw acoustics and the way the song was interpreted reminds me of ‘dialogue songs’ reminiscent of Forgetful Lucy and Grow Old with you by Adam Sandler. This song is more spoken than sung, with emotions brimming at the songs refrain. This makes it more of something one can relate to, for the listener. Something one can whisper to a loved ones ear, sing to her in a party, or sing to himself while pondering how unreachable she is. Just am glad the song did not turn out to be of the cheesy boyband sort.

Dil Hai Chota Sa by A.R. Rahman
This song made my week, but not before being invited to contribute to the Song of The Week series did. So, thank you!
‘Choti Si Asha’ is from the film ‘Roja‘ and loosely means ‘Just A Little Hope’ or ‘Just A Little Wish’ depending on whom you ask. It put A.R Rahman, the composer, on Bollywood’s map (he never got off); he’s recently scored the stage adaptation of Lord of The Rings. Another of his popular songs opened Spike Lee’s Inside Man. This song, to me, is where Reggae found its match in Indian music. The influence of Reggae in South Asian music in general has been immense and this song is one of those creations that cannot be categorized as either and yet cannot exist without the various elements that made it so…well, perfect. I’ll simplify: Whatever you feel listening to the song is exactly what its intentions were. I tried to simplify…sorry. I’ve been listening to this song for 15 years now and the melody has never tired on my ears. I checked again…right about when I’m writing this.

Ekko - Berkley's Place Ekko - Berkley Place
Dancing in the Dark by Tegan and Sara (Bruce Springsteen Cover)
Tegan and Sara have got such great voices and I rarely hear them doing new covers. They seem to imbue the song with new meaning. When Bruce does it, it’s like a romantic comedy. When T&S do it, it’s just hot.

Thank you guys so much for your great contribution! This is quite an ecclectic mix…still trying to decide on a favorite.

Another incredible selection of tracks…you guys will never surprise me enough! :)
All the songs are great, but in my opinion Emon’s choice is the best! Am I biased? Yes, I am! I have a weakness for Indian music…and for Rehman’s tracks in particular (”Pal Pal Hai Bhari” and “Chale Chalo” are my favourite).
I think you are perfectly right, Emon…that song really has something reggae about it! By the way, I knew the Telugu version of this track…its title is “Chinna Asai”. Have you listened to it too? :)

[...] Speaking of favorite songs, I was recently asked to be a “Song of the Week” contributor over at The Plugg, one of my favorite entertainment blogs.  Once a week, The Plugg writers offer up their favorite song picks, and it’s always a great and eclectic mix.  But this week they decided to take a break and let some other bloggers contribute their favorites.  If you want to listen to my pick for song of the week as well as see what some other bloggers are listening to, head over and check out The Plugg’s Song of the Week - Blogger Special. It was an honor to be part of this week’s Song of the Week, and an equal honor to be with listed with a great selection of songs. :) What can I say guys, you just upped the level a bar higher.

Oh, and did I read it right? This post is called a “special”? Wow! Can’t wait to brag about it on my blog. :)

Wow, talk about eclectic! Indie, Indi(an), country. I’m afaraid to say that Ekko gets my vote as my favorite. I don’t like Springsteen and that was totally easy to handle. iPodwheels, I agree with the simplicity of your tune. I dig it too. Ok, well, as I keep going back I keep finding more and more that I like. I don’t have the time this morning to comment on each one, but you guys are totally stellar for taking the time to do this. I’m glad you could join us in the fun! Great contributions. Don’t steal my job.

  8. Emon on June 22nd, 2007 8:01 am

Thanks, guys, it was an honor. Thank you, Giovanna! Yes, I’ve listened to the original version of it as well. I haven’t heard the two tracks you’ve mentioned but would love to look them up.
    Great selections, everyone! :)

Thanks for the week off and great job! Good choices all around but I particularly like the uber catchy ‘You Made Me Like It’, it’s a panacea for my well-developed musical sweet tooth. Also ‘Rose’, hey, ipodwheels, any song that starts out “Stop smiling” can’t be bad! :)

Next time I’ll pick and English song… They seem to be going over better ;)

Steve we appreciate any help! Who cares if “it goes over”. It gives everyone and opportunity to listen to something different for a change.
