Song of the Week - December 14

Every other week each of our writers shares the song that made his/her week just a little bit brighter.

Casting Agents and Cowgirls by Busdriver
What happens when an obviously intelligent rapper meets up with a punk label? We get Busdriver on Epitaph. Regan Farquhar is his name, and blasting hyperactive lyrics on turbo, while slapping you with over-literate and detailed sentences is his game. There is no way you will listen to this song once and pick up on everything. What’s up with the dot on his forehead?

What Do I Know by Peter Walker
I was surprised when I realized that I’ve never posted this song before because it’s a song I listen to all the time. On Young Gravity, his sophomore release for DangerBird records (who put out great albums by Silver Sun Pickups, Sea Wolf, The One AM Radio and plenty
more,) Peter Walker has a knack for mixing upbeat music with depressing topics. “What Do I Know” is about dealing with a break up but the album only gets darker from there.

Weekend Wars by MGMT
I’m really loving everything I’ve heard so far from this new band. This song starts like a weird cross between The Rolling Stones and Ween and then just shoots off to great new territories, leading to a beautiful explosion in the end…and it also has the scary sentence (shuddering) “we couldn’t use computers anymore”…

West Coast by Coconut Recordings
We all know Jason Schwartzman from films like Spun, I Heart Huckabees and the Darjeeling Limited; well he recently created a band and released an album under the name Coconut Records – ‘Nighttiming’. I stumbled upon his profile on Virb.com and caught the video for the single, West Coast and been an avid listener to the album since.

Frosty the Snowman by Cocteau Twins
Merry Christmas!
So, what’s your song of the week?

Jason Schwartzman is sure a talented guy.
Isn’t he also in Phantom Planet, the band that sings that song from The O.C.?
He WAS in Phantom Planet. He had left that band I believe.
Just saw MGMT, Fiery Furnaces and Michael Goodman and the Mike this week in Boston.
Jason Schwartzman, he was in Rushmore, right? That was a really excellent performance.
Ryan, I’m jealous
Rusty, you listed all his movies and didn’t include Rushmore?
Don’t worry about. D took up the slack!
Loved it and thank you for sharing..
ya, i don’t know why I forgot it…
Loved this version of Frosty! Haven’t heard this before. Thanks DT
