Song of the Week - July 13
By: Charbarred | in: Music |
Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his/her week just a little bit brighter…
This week we’re honored to have top Digg submitter and Radioactive Pictures mastermind MrBabyMan helping us out with our selections.
MrBabyMan
Made by Greg Weeks
There’s something about this ballad’s minor key and unsteady harmonium, combined with lyrics that evoke some unspoken oppression that haunts me long after listening to it. I was introduced to this song through this equally disturbing Adidas ad campaign which featured it.

Dead Disco by Metric
It’s nice to discover songs you haven’t heard on albums you thought you knew. I love the depiction of a pointless nightlife scene. Something about those lyrics just makes me nod in agreement. Maybe because I haven’t been out dancing in almost 10 years.
D Thompson
Dame Fortune by Andy Partridge
Andy Partridge is basically the driving force behind the great band XTC. He’s an unusual person, prone to paralyzing panic attacks and unable to perform live for ages and ages now which has certainly hurt the band’s popularity. Beyond that, label trouble kept XTC from recording for almost ten years. Then, when things were settled Andy decided he wanted their first new album in a decade to be an all acoustic affair, a move that angered guitarist Dave Gregory so much he quit on the spot. The result, two mediocre albums and another XTC-less decade. That hasn’t stopped Andy though, and at his best he basically is XTC. Here’s a rumination on the nature of luck from his Fuzzy Warbles series of which, I believe, there are eight volumes. Is that a penny whistle solo I hear?

Say Hello by Rosie Thomas (featuring Sufjan Stevens)
I took an instant liking to this mellow goodness. Rosie Thomas collaborates with Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer on this album. I love the way her character comes out in the songs - being real, giggling, innocence, playful and modest. Say Hello always make me laugh at the end. It’s just a song I can see playing out on streets all over the world. This week has been a good week for some mellow reflection.
Alibastard
Cleaning Up Coney Island by Jollyship the Whiz-Bang
Nick Jones’ iconic, hilarious psychosexual pyrate/puppet/rock operas are traversing the country like a subtle whirligigging sea-storm, selling out shows in New York, Portland and Seattle. Somehow, his endless use of pirate metaphor doesn’t get old, even past two full length albums, several full scale theater productions and a cable access gig easily accessed on YouTube. Check out I am the Sealion on their MySpace page.

Felt by Neila
I had the pleasure of interviewing Neila (Pronounced:Nay-La) a few years ago and she was just as interesting as I imagined she’d be. This was the first song of hers that I heard and I became an instant fan afterwards. Sadly I don’t think she records much nowadays. I certainly hope I’m wrong.

They Got Away by Built to Spill
Last Saturday Stereogum posted two new tracks they got exclusively from Built To Spill. You can no longer download the tunes from their site, but here’s one of them for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!
Kendall
Phase by Benzos
Benzos encompass what Indie music should be. The production is above the level most indie bands tend to be able to afford, and the song writing is well sculpted and engaging. These guys should be on the radar of anyone who want to find out about a band before their friends. I get a feeling it won’t be long until they get really big.
Ankle Injuries by Fujiya & Miyagi
I’ve been noticing this clip circulating on the web for a couple of weeks now and it certainly deserves the exponential number of views it’s been receiving. What a great concept.. and so well executed. Music video is making a BIG come back.
So what’s your song of the week?

Hey guys!
Great choices all around.
So by now you’ve probably noticed we’ve changed how The Plugg looks!
Hope you like it..
Great job Rusty! (and a little pat on the back to myself as well).
Awesome song selections guys. That Greg Weeks video is amazing.
I liked Greg Weeks a lot. I still pick my song though. Am I allowed to do that?
Oh, and the new version looks great! It seems a lot more friendly looking. Where’d the music player go?
Fantastic.
The best song of the week ever, no doubt. Wish I had 6 stars to rate it…
Rusty, Built to Spill=great bad, really. I had never listened to that track, soooo ska
Char, what can I say…I have just fallen in love with that song. Sounds old, maybe the glorious 80s? I love the starting chords…they remind me of the early tracks by The Cure, then of Siouxie, then the guitar riff of the chorus of some song I can’t remember… (getting old)
One more wicked track chosen by Alibastard…I really couldnì’t ask for more, this is all I want.
of course I meant “baNd”
This confirms my theory about getting old.
Lior that pixel video is pretty sweet. It reminds me of a White Stripes video. Makes me wish I was 12 playing old computer games like Space Quest 2 again.
Radio’s back.
…and thanks Giovanna
I dunno, I sort of liked the light bulb hanging from the wires. Reminded me of my apartment in Chicago.
But the new plugg reminds me of my friend’s shiny new condo and I know where I’d rather live!
Char, that Metric song is really cool but it takes second place to Lior’s entry. What a great song! What an impressive video!
Different after looking at them all I liked the one with the bear and the girl..
