Song of the Week - July 6

Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his/her week just a little bit brighter…

Thankless Marriage by Spokane
I always hit you with rugged indie tracks, so I thought I’d mix it up a bit this week and give you yet another rugged indie track. But this time it’s a bit different. Lately, I find myself looking for music that can play in the background and flow with my work. Spokane’s long awaited new song has the perfect horror film/romantic drama electro acoustic touch that I’ve been longing for. What I love about this moody lingering track is that there’s something for everyone to relate to, it doesn’t pinpoint a single genre. If you’re into it, the new album is out August 7th.

Hold On, Hold On by Neko Case
Something about this song just makes me want to jam out. That kind of nostalgic 60’s meets rocking out chords sticks with you. So, this song made my week quite simply because I was in need of a good jam out! And her voice rocks!

Out of a Western, A Woman and Friend by Bjorn Quenemoen with Stephanie Bauman
For all those still recovering from July 4th benders, mid-summer late nights, sordid young affairs and wild, wild changes, here is a calming ray, embued with melancholic noises and some kind harmonizing. Not your typical heehaw, Bjorn is one of my most cherished discoveries of late. A sweet, complex breath. New albums are materializing, nearly complete I hear.
‘How far we were off
“It’s never enough” is so true
We keep to ourselves
And yell at ourselves’
Kendall
Strict Scrutiny by Cougar
This song really continues down a path laid out by artists like American Football, Explosions in the Sky, and Adem. It’s sweepy, splashy msuic, but with an electronic beat behind it. It’s repetitive enough to keep it trance-like, but evolving enough to keep your interest held.

Blue Skies by Tom Waits
Here’s an early song by Tom Waits, note the utter lack of his trademark whiskey and cigarettes growl. Summer’s heating up and before we’re all deluged with songs of summer love etc. I thought I’d pull this extraordinarily sad number out of my hat. Lately I’ve been looking at “Blue Skies” as a kind of political allegory. Maybe she left you, maybe you don’t recognize the country you were living in just seven years ago, but at least the weather’s nice.

C’mon Sea Legs by Immaculate Machine
Immaculate Machine’s new album is fast becoming my favorite album of the year. C’mon Sea Legs is bit different to the rest of the album. It has this campfire/pirates song feel to it, with a chorus that keeps going up by tone until only Kathryn Calder (the female singer) can sing it. Kathryn Calder is also part of The New Pornographers’ latest album, linking her to Neko Case and thus making Song of the Week just a little bit more interesting, no?
Lee H
Imaginary Girl by The Bees (U. S.)
I always find it hard to listen to this song and not smile. In just 2 and a half minutes it never fails to brighten my day. The (U. S.) at the end of their name is to settle a dispute with a UK band of the same name. Simple and effective, much like the music itself.

Just for Now by Imogen Heap
I’ve seen a number of solo artists showcase their talents through creative looping and delay effects. I think my pick of the week has done so with great taste - resisting the temptation to go overboard with such amazing accessories - keeping things simple and focused. Lovely sounding exhibition I think.
So what’s your song of the week?

That’s a great video from Imogen Heap.
Rusty, that song’s about as close to ambient music as you can get and not actually BE ambient. Have you heard Brian Eno’s Ambient 4: On Land? Thankless marriage reminded me of that album.
Lee H, what an enjoyable song
What an amazing selction of song guys. It’s the first time I actually contemplated burning them all on CD and going on a (quiet) joyride.
The winner for me though is that Bjorn Quenemoen song. Simply amazing!
Wow! Every song’s a keeper! Imogen Heap song was beautiful. Case / Waits / Quenemon blew me away. Great stuff guys.
