Song of the Week - June 29

By: Charbarred | in: Music |

Fog

Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his week just a little bit brighter…

Charbarred
Inflatable Ape Pt. 3 by Fog
I listen to a lot of music. Some of it is awful, some of it is good. But it’s not often that I land upon a really great album that I keep coming back to again and again. I’m still getting acquainted with Fog, but so far I’ve been really impressed. There is no part 1 or 2 to this, and with lyrics such as “I am smothered in glistening chicken fat” how could I resist?

Killing Him by Amy LaVere
I like this song because it has an odd sentiment. It’s a reminder of how incredible complicated love can be.
Amy LaVeres’ current album Anchors & Anvils was produced my Memphis legend Jim Dickinson. (Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, The Replacements, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.) She also doubles as an actor as her roles in Walk the Line and Black Snake Moan have proven. Expect to hear big things from this young lady.

Kid On My Shoulders by White Rabbits
Being all down on myself for not ever putting up a brand new song, I went searching bound and determined that THIS week I wasn’t going to put up some blow-the-dust-off-it track but something genuinely new. You know, just so I could prove to myself that I still had a little moxie. Anyway, I found this song by White Rabbits off their new (and I mean freakin’ new) album. I gather this is their first release, though to tell the truth the only thing I know for sure is the CD is called ‘Fort Nightly’. “Kid On My Shoulders” depends on a four note repetion played on piano and reminds me of other songs I’ve enjoyed and for some reason considered “Russian sounding”. Enjoy my White Rabbits song, it’s new!

Balls by Pink & Noseworthy
After a long break from the record, I’ve begun listening to Pink & Noseworthy again this week. The subject matter is superb, conveyed in bold and well crafted lyrics. I chose track 9 from the album, “Balls”, for you to hear because I love the title hook: “If I had the balls, it would be easy, believe me..” and the big build to a chorus that never happens. These two elements work so well together because each resemble the idea of not having quite enough courage to follow-through. Excellent writing and the male/female vocals in unison is a lovely characteristic.

Alibastard
My Impure Hair by Blonde Redhead
Jesus, Kazu Makino just about whistles this song through a hard carndy, two parts sour, one part sweet, sings it half asleep, in a bubble bath soaked in total darkness, her lips dripping. I just can’t deside whether to fall asleep, cut my wrists or look under the bed for aliens. And then you realize its all about how she lost her virginity.
That travels alot of terrain.

Kendall
Crown Victoria by Robbers On High Street
Robbers on High Street are part of the New Line Records line up along with Robert Hammond Jr, and The Sounds. Hailing from NYC, the 3 piece fits in perfectly with it’s label mates in musical styling. The song is actually about some shady characters turned criminals. And the chorus is literally about a murder committed with a Crown Victoria car. It’s quite an entertaining listen lyrically, and the music is fun to boot!

Epilogue, Celebration by The Oaks
Every so often a music release appears in my mailbox that gives me pause and makes me listen hard and think about something special - perhaps more important than just songs. That happened last year when a very special project called The Oaks. The music is a sonic marvel. Rich guitars and layered beats are treat for the ears. Close your eyes and listen!
The Oaks are now a full band, performing sensational music with heart and soul live throughout the Southern US. They regularly donate large portions of their proceeds to charity.

So what’s your song of the week?

Char, it’s music like that that got me interested in music in the first place. Thanks for a great track.

No one’s wondering where Rusty is?!
Well…I was on vacation and didn’t get a chance to submit my SOTW.

Great choices, I think this is one of my favorite SOTW ever!

Added everything to The Plugg radio up above on the right, give it a go.

I was going to ask where Rusty was but I thought it would be impolite to out him as a CIA agent.
