Song of the Week - October 31
By: Charbarred | in: Music |Every once in a while (and it’s really been a while!) each of our writers (and esteemed guests) shares the song that made his week just a little bit brighter. Our honoured guest this week is Ryan from Ryan’s Smashing Life.

Fishhawk – Blacktop
Fishhawk is a new band out of Atlanta that is starting to ripple the water a little bit. They are a 3 piece with no drummer. The live show is drawing pretty solid reviews, and the new album, which has not had an official release is starting to make it’s way around some tight circles. Look for nontraditional song structure, prechorses that are as good as a chorus, and a singer with a voice that doesn’t sound like anyone around today.

Oh No Oh My - Wham Bam Thank You Spaceman
I really don’t know much about these guys. Their from Austin Texas, and they had a great song on Weeds last year (A Walk in the Park). I just know that I’m really digging this tune, which is all that matters I guess. Oh, and it’s kinda Halloween-y…

Calexico - Man Made Lake
Funny enough I’ve had Calexico’s new album ‘Carried To Dust’ for quite a while now but haven’t gotten around to listening to it. Suddenly I’m walking in to a store in Berlin and hear a cool song in the background, after asking around I was told it’s Calexico. After listening to the whole album trying to remember this song - 1. it’s an awesome album 2. Man Made Lake is the best track on it!

The Tremeloes - Here Comes my Baby
I thought it would be best, since we’ve been gone for a while, to come back with something upbeat so the more recent music I’ve been listening to has to take a back seat to this cover of an early Cat Stevens song song by the Tremeloes. The happiest song about a broken heart ever. The most underplayed oldie in history. I hereby call on the world to give this song its’ due!

Lifeguard Nights - Sunshine
We are sharing “Sunshine” a track off the brand new album from New Jersey’s Lifeguard Nights. The band have slowly made a reputation for themselves for their wild live performances with as many as 11 players up on stage. The songs on Punch Sky - the new record span the musical gamut - similar in many ways to Lifeguard Night’s 2007 record Church of Sky. Like Ween, Lifeguard Nights have decided that they will play anything and everything - but only if they play it well and with all their heart. Punch Sky was a totally unexpected gem to pluck from our mail bag. Check this band out - you will love their music abilities and will probably laugh at some of their wild songwriting. Highly recommended!

Truly awesome choices this week guys!
Fishhawk are going to be huge! I’m not a huge fan of Calexico, but this tune is one of their best.
The Tremelos rock, despite the fact that one of them is Chesney Hawkes’ father (look it up), and Lifeguard Nights are definitely getting on my playlist.
Agreed, great choices!
I was just chatting with Daniel from Oh No Oh My a couple of days ago. I have a post on the way about them.
Keep inviting me back if you like; I actually have a bunch of bright new bands to share if you keep inviting me! Next time I will share a new Boston band with your readers.
Good stuff all around and I hereby promise to post nothing but music from 2007 and 2008 for the rest of the year.
D, I always liked that you added some variety. Don’t change on MY account!
OK. Next time, the Robert Wyatt song I was saving for the third podcast it look like we’re never going to do. Or maybe the Killer Pussy song…. Or MAYBE, the Mega-tones! Does anyone remember who Leonid Brezhnev was?
Great to see you guys back. As usual all the songs have their merits but the Calexico song really stands out to me. I’ll be checking out that album, thanks RustyCat.
