Song of the Week - Uplifting Music that isn’t Bullsh*t

By: Charbarred | in: Music |

Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his/her week just a little bit brighter…This week I was sending everyone reminders about SOTW and mistakenly sent an email to the wrong Danielle. After I apologized for invading her mailbox, that “other” Danielle got back to me with her own submission. So while the real Danielle is off for this week, I present to you “Bizarro Danielle”.

Charbarred
Fell off the Floor, Man by dEUS
There are many songs I would call uplifting, but dEUS is all about the music. Everyone of their songs encompasses all that is good about bands playing together. They really party with their musicality, reminding me of jazz, but without the self importance and the cheese. Fell off the Floor covers about 20 genres and always brightens up my day.

Lee H Lee H
Pretty Girls by Neko Case
With my past offerings of King Straggler’s “Good Man” and Silver Lakes “Be Here Now ” one might think I’d be tapped out of uplifting songs that aren’t bullshit but thanks to the one and only Neko Case I have the chance once again to spread a little sunshine. I love this song because it’s just as poetic as it is simple. You understand it on first listen but on repeated listens you always catch a little more.
Simply beautiful.

Chorale For Beethoven’s 9th Symphony by Pete Seger
Sometime in the 50’s, folk legend Pete Seeger recorded an album of pop and classical selections he called “The Goofing Off Suite“. Part of this extraordinary LP was a VERY short rendition of the chorale for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, otherwise known as The Ode To Joy. I’m sure you’ll find this piece of music instantly recognizeable but rarely has it sounded as happy as it does in this stripped down version. There are only a handful of songs I turn to when I’m feeling truly low, this one has been helping me through tough times for several decades.

The Weatherman’s Refrain by Ford & Fitzroy
The lyrics are awesome and it’s got this 50’s melody behind it that makes you want to get up and dance. We love it in the office.

Alibastard
Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space by Spiritualized
[Alibastard is away this week, but since he came up with this theme I figured we might as well include his selection unblurbed]

rustycat.jpg RustyCat
Silence Kit by Pavement
This song is one of my all time favorites, it just makes me want to drop everything and sing. It was also my Pavement gateway song. Charbarred bought me the Crooked Rain album back in the day for my birthday and that marked the day that I moved from metal and grunge to indie lo-fi.

Kendall
Sticky Honey by Juliette And The Licks
I will admit when this video was presented to me I was skeptical. I like Juliette Lewis movies, and seriously had my doubts that I’d have any interest in her music career. This is a straight up rock treat with robot battles, spandex, and electric guitars with lasers. The album is called Four on the Floor.

So What’s your song of the week?

Allright Alibastard! I own that Spiritualized CD, it’s a really good album, not to mention the song you chose is one of the best on the CD. Good taste young man!

    Cracking tunes this week guys
    Neko Case - Love her
Pete Seger - Best classical music cover ever
Ford & Fitzroy - They’re destined for great things
Spiritualized - I don’t really like their lead singer (his name escapes me) but that’s definitely their best album and a great tune.
Pavement- I wish I could buy everyone I know this album. I probably would but most people will just smile politely and never listen to it
Juliette And The Licks - I love watching her play the rock star. It takes a while to get used to, but I’m finally convinced she’s really into it.

I bought the new rerelease of Crooked Rain, Crooked rain, and I love it. That is until I am halfway through both disks. There is so much stuff on it, that it’s almost overkill. Good thing the first disc, is the actual album.

Ya, same here. I picked it up a few months ago with the idea in mind that I love the album and I haven’t managed to get through it yet.

Here’s my uplifting tune: “Alive” by VHS or Beta. Very happy and bouncy. I get sensations of optimism and hopefulness every time I listen.

I really liked Bizarro Danielle’s selection. Beethoven’s 9th, Spritualized, and Neko Case were excellent. Great picks all around. And oh how I love Barcelona! It’s infectious. They’re like Polyphonic Spree with a touch of down’s syndrome.

((And oh how I love Barcelona! It’s infectious. They’re like Polyphonic Spree with a touch of down’s syndrome.))
    That’s some great writing there.
