Summerbirds In the Cellar

By: Kendall | in: Music |

The Orlando, FL music scene, is mainly known for its boy groups like the Backstreet Boys and ultra radio friendly rock acts like Creed and Matchbox 20. There is more, you have to open your eyes. If one truly looks hard enough, the best act that has yet to shine its brightest is by far Summerbirds In the Cellar.

Summerbirds In the Cellar
The band started off as a 3 piece with writing team Brad Register and Curtis Brown, and drummer Tyson Bodiford. Later a second drummer known as Yardley was added to the lineup. Both Brad and Curtis Hail from Orlando, while the other half of the band is representing Athens, GA. Soon the rest of the band in rumored to be making the northward journey.

Their first Full Length album is entitled With The Hands Of The Hunter It All Becomes Dead, and was released in October, 2006. The release was recorded with the help of Andy LeMaster (Now It’s Overhead). LeMaster is best known for his production work with Bright Eyes, and R.E.M.

Sonically you are hit with brooding mix of delayed guitars, a myriad of keyboards that writhe through the mix, and vocals that sound weary and hopeful at the same time. This moody piece of art is a sonic adventure that won’t tire or bore the listener. The stand out track is “Behold the Wolf” which starts off with marching drums and a simple enough guitar lick that will hook you by the nose as it leads you in. Soon enough synths wash over and pamper you only to put to bed with sweet vocals right before the song sprouts some wings and leads you into a harmonies chorus that drops you on a jagged slope before starting over again. As things smooth out you are relieved with a stick clacking drum clack accompanied by piano haunted with a tad of feedback bleeding from the veins of its simplicity. Even when this song repeats itself, it never stays the same.

Other Stand out Tracks include “Lonely Sleeping Giant” that is helped along the way with some innocent female vocals, and Honest friend which clocks in at over 6:30 minutes and starts off barren only to take the album out with a noisy feedback ending that leaves you wondering what’s next?
On their MySpace page the answer is in the form of two demo songs off of their soon to be released follow-up album. The sound seems to be growing, but feeding off of all the energy At The Hands of the Hunter…built up. With any more attention this band could soon be joining the top of a list of bands that should be watched carefully, and listened to even more.

Wow, a good band indeed! Never thought about a possible crossroad between psychedelia, the Cure and a hint of electronic rock before listening to Summerbird.

I saw them live a while back and thought they were really cool. Recently I bought the CD to support a local band, and almost kicked myself for not buying it sooner.

I love this line Kendall: “synths wash over and pamper you only to put to bed with sweet vocals” what a way to end the day.

Oh yeah, fantastic band! I like Behold the Wolf, but both songs are great.

I have to write crazy stuff like that to keep up with Mr. Thompson, and Allibastard and our readers like Giovanna! If I want to play ball with the big boys I have to start swinging the stick.
