The 100th Post

Along with the many stories that never saw the light of day here on the Plugg, there was one named “The Rules of Music Blogging“. The first rule read “We don’t give a damn about you - write about the music not about yourself”. So just once, being that this is a special occasion, I’ll break my own rule (which is a stupid one anyway) and spend a few paragraphs with a tissue in my hand thanking the academy. If you’re here for the music, you can scroll right down and listen to a completely unrelated song…I’ll be here gushing for a little while.

Originally me and Rusty ran a Digg clone on this domain. The idea was to run an entertainment social news site that will give a proper stage to all our favorite blogs. Long story short, it didn’t take. After a while Rusty convinced me we should write our own blog and join in on the fun. He wrote the first one, I followed suit and even managed to piss a few people off. We figured, hey this is not half bad, we love music, we love films, why not turn this into something a bit more serious? So with our 100th post, I think it’s about time we thanked a few people (seriously, that song is at the bottom, you can hit ‘page down’ right now).

Netscape

A big big hug to the Netscape community
It’s no secret we love social news sites. One site in particular has embraced our stories with votes galore, crazy comments, and general respect to what we’re trying to do. Not only that, C.K. (who ran the site at the time) even gave me his blessing to submit our stories (cheers man). We made many good friends there and are proud to be members of this esteemed community. Not only did the Netscapers like our stories, 2 of them even started writing for us…and for that Netscape deserves another round of applause.

Another hug to the StumbleUpon community
When the flood of traffic started hitting us a few months back we were very surprised. At first we were told StumbleUpon is only good for generating empty traffic. We ignored that and started making friends. If you see Giovanna’s and RemixBoy’s participation in our song of the week feature, I think you’d join me in saying, Stumblers - you guys rock!

Digg

A huge boo to Digg
Since 2005 I’ve been a dedicated Digg user. I’ve clocked in thousands of stories, always making sure I’m submitting quality stuff. To thank me for my hard work, Digg decided to ban The Plugg. We persevered. To add insult to injury, Digg has recently re-instated The Plugg only to cause it to get auto-buried whenever a story gets submitted. Maybe we should have done more top 10 lists? Maybe we should have only written about Lost and the Star Wars? In any case, thanks for nothing Digg…

A confident pat on the back to our colleagues
With anything you do, it’s always good to have friends. Throughout our journey we’ve met some amazing bloggers who supported us and taught us the tricks of trade. Steve and Baron, thanks for all the attention, the plugs and making us feel we belong. Joe, Ryan, Ekko and Emon, thanks so much for inspiring us. Every day we meet another great blogger. Blogs like Fangasm and Each Note Secure truly prove that the Internet is the greatest place to get your entertainment fix.

And of course, the writers
Shortly after The Plugg started I got a message in Netscape from some guy called ‘KTab’. “I like your blog” he wrote. “Thanks, wanna write for us?” I replied. And Kendall did. Among the various emails from music promoters, I managed to salvage an email from a guy who wanted to be called Alibastard, he also wanted to join in on the fun. Another crazy guy kept commenting on our stories at Netscape, giving us no choice but to recruit D Thompson. You guys allow us to have a “proper” site with eye opening reviews and great crazy commentary. For that, we are truly grateful.

Last but not least - you!
OK, this is really turning into an Oscar speech (I forgot to thank my manager, god, my parents…). But seriously, if no one read our stories, we wouldn’t be writing them. So thanks for all the support (and making it all the way through this cheese-fest).

Oh yeah, and the song I promised
It’s Mudhoney’s ‘Hate The Police’. Why? Because it’s the most unrelated song I could think of, and also the only Mudhoney song I can truly enjoy.

Seeing how we’ve grown in the past year we’re thinking of expanding and taking The Plugg to the next level. If you want to join in on the fun and write for The Plugg, drop us a line.

See ya’ll on the 200th post.

Congratulations! A great goal for the corner stone of all music and film blogs ever! Keep up your wonderful job, you guys deserve at least more 1000000000000000 posts! :D

    Thanks guys!
As for Digg, as far as I understand from their unhelpful support: We had 3 stories hit the front page on Digg.
The one about why samuel jackson sucks was buried as innacurate
One was a dupe (my bad)
One was marked as spam because it wasn’t about Apple or Nintendo
    That’s all it took.
What really happened is that Digg identifies sites owned by its top users and bans them so they won’t game the system. A polite email about submitting these stories would have done, but they chose to shoot first and ask questions later.

Here’s a song to celebrate the situation:

The White Stripes - Party of Special Things

    Cheers, Ryan

Auto-ban for top users? Does that mean I am now a top user and that is why my site is auto-banned? Nope, can’t be becuase even when I do not submit the link it gets buried…

PS: I’m stealing your Digg logo!

  6. Charbarred on March 12th, 2007 5:38 am

Yeah, steal the Digg logo. After all I had to spend a few minutes explaining to my wife why I was searching Google Images for “dog piss”.

    Before I forget…

Thank you Charbarred for informing me of a certain female musician! My wife does not care for her music but I rather enjoy it.

1 out 2 is good enough Steve. If you were to reflect the rest of the world I’d be rolling in it :-D

Thanks for letting me stick around Charbarred! Thanks to anyone else who has read my stories and enjoyed them…and even if you didn’t enjoy them, thanks for reading them. Here’s to the next 100!

  12. Emon on March 12th, 2007 8:39 am

Congrats, guys, and thanks for the mention! 100 means just getting warmed up…and by 110 you should be able to boil Digg to death. All the best!

Digg is a world of its own, and not a pleasant one. If your Digg user ID, your blog domain, or your IP address has been banned from Digg, you must be doing something right!
