The ARIA Awards, Gotye and Kate Miller-Heidke
By: JenWilson | in: Music |
I’m still recovering from my big night at the ARIA Awards, ‘the Australian music industry’s night of nights’ as they say. Apart from the highly publicized wins from world-renowned rock outfit Silverchair, there were a couple of dark horses that galloped through the gallows that night - one of which was Male Artist of the Year, Gotye (pronounced Gor-tee-ay). His debut album, Mixed Blood, has been the centre of much critical acclaim from within the music industry and has been absolutely hammered by national youth network, triple j. And I for one am a fan.
He is a truly unique performer - just as you think you’ve managed to narrow his sound into a genre box, the next track bursts him right out of it again.

Here are some examples so you know what I’m talking about… let me know what you think - and remember, if it’s good, spread the word!
Gotye: Heart’s a Mess
Gotye: The Only Way

Oh, and one more artist you should DEFINITELY get on your radar is Kate Miller-Heidke. Although she didn’t win at the awards (she was up for Best Newcomer), she did manage to make pretty much all of the sold-out arena awestruck with her quirky, yet classically trained vocal acrobatics. Think Tori Amos, Kate Bush and if anyone knows this Aussie reference from the 90s, Frente. But don’t stress, it’s all a great mash-up! Check out the her track Words, as well as her version of Britney’s Toxic and some advice for aspiring Australian Idol contestants - brilliant!

Wow. I really like the Gotye video.
I had a listen to his album. It’s really diverse, and has some great tunes on it.
You HAD to? Did Jen sit on your chest pin down your arms, and stick earbuds in your head?
Read it again mate, I “had a listen to”, not “had to listen to”
doh
Thanks for the (uh fiery) feedback - glad to hear you liked Gotye. I thought Kate may be a little too pop for a lot of you, but regardless, wanted to share her with you… have a good week!
