The Plugg Inbox – Going Through Plum Trees and Floating Paper

By: Rustycat | in: Music |

We get hundreds of press releases on a daily basis to our inbox. We love the music and the press agents and labels are sending us trully awesome stuff but it’s really hard writing about each and every cool band. So I wanted to share some quick notes with you guys while I listen to music.
I have to add that it’s quite refreshing to see that the promoters out there are doing a great job sending us music that really connects with what The Plugg is all about. Thanks!

Tab The Band

Tab the Band – Secretary’s Day

[Download]

“Boston’s latest and greatest Power Rock Trio, Tab the Band, hit the stage in their hometown of Boston at TT the Bears and come down to warm up NYC at Pianos. Tony, Adrian and Ben will release debut full length album Pulling Out Just Enough to Win on North Street Records The boys from Boston spent their summer and fall warming stages in dates up and down both coasts.”

Rusty Says:
Good rock n’ roll for your listening pleasure.

White Hinterland

White Hinterland - Dreaming of Plum Trees

[Download]

“White Hinterland’s debut album, “Phylactery Factory,” will be released on CD, LP and digital formats on March 4th, 2008 via Dead Oceans.”

Rusty Says:
Wow. Dreaming of Plum Trees is an amazing track from an amazing artist; I’m really looking forward to this one.

The XYZ Affair

The XYZ Affair – All My Friends
[Video]

“With an affinity for four part harmonies, wall of sound fuzz guitars, big drums, and flashy guitar solos, the quartet has since birthed their triumphant debut A Few More Published Studies (recorded by Longwave’s Shannon Ferguson, mastered by Aloha’s TJ Lipple, mixed by Essex Green collaborator Britt Myers) to the liking of a growing legion of devotees.”

Rusty Says:
Loving the sound, loving the video.

Cassettes Won’t Listen

Cassettes Won’t Listen – Paper Float

[Download]

“Cassettes Won’t Listen embodies an otherworldly and distinctive blend of electronica and indie rock, with comparisons being drawn to the Postal Service, Beck, Hot Chip, The Notwist, and DJ Shadow. His live show blasts at a frantic pace with Jason hopping from turntables to guitar to keys and vocals as a true one-man band.”

Rusty Says:
Free EP on their webite – good music!

King of Prussia

King of Prussia – Misadventures of the Campaign Kids

[Download]

“While a quick assessment of King of Prussia’s debut might bring to mind the Smiths, Belle and Sebastian, or a more straight-ahead Flaming Lips, the band’s deftly-designed, often misanthropic, lyrics–which speak of home as place, home as state, consumerism, summertime, etc.–place the band closer to the Steely Dans and Magnetic Fields of the world. The point here is that it’s hard to categorize KoP, even if their erudite power pop is warmly familiar.”

Rusty Says:
I love it – have a good listen to these guys, it’s an interesting album.

The Mars Volta

The Mars Volta – Ilyena
[Video]

“The Mars Volta went back to school for the latest video from their fourth studio album, ‘The Bedlam in Goliath,’ titled ‘Llyena.’ Omar Rodríguez-López takes on the role of the teacher, while Cedric Bixler-Zavala serves as a student, who, like all ace pupils, incites classroom mayhem — including weed, marker-sniffing, record-hurling, guns and graffiti. But the Volta didn’t stop there. The band also created unique lo-fi videos for other select tunes from ‘Goliath.’”

Rusty Says:
Yes! The Mars Volta are is of my favorite bands ever.

The Heavy Circles

The Heavy Circles – Henri

[Download]

“Edie Brickell calls The Heavy Circles “Harper Simon’s gift to me.” This collaboration between the New Bohemians singer-songwriter and guitarist-composer Simon is a magical blend of happenstance and meticulous craftsmanship, a collection of spur-of-the-moment tunes burnished into soulful, guitar-laden gems.”

Rusty Says:
The best stuff Edie Brickel has done since marrying Paul Simon.

The Broken Family Band – You Get Me

[Download]

“If you are a connoisseur of cynicism, bitterness and angst, often leavened by a sarcastic and sometimes outright hilarious wit, then listen on! Over the course of the six albums and EPs so far released, Steven Adams’ more-or-less convincingly accented drawl has taken in recurring themes of car-crash booze and drug fuelled relationships, devilish messed-up women and general non-specific twenty- and thirty-something malaise.”

Rusty Says:
A great way to end this segment!

I am really hopeful about the White Hinterland and King of Prussia releases. On one listen it’s hard to know if I will like the new Edie Brickell material (The Heavy Circles) - but there’s a lot of promise in that one track; “Henri.” The same is true for The Broken Family Band. I want to hear more - I haven’t been quite won over yet by “You Get Me.” I can’t figure out Cassettes Won’t Listen. I really do want to like them but they sound so different from one track to the next.

To finish my thought - I just popped in Cassettes Won’t Listen’s “Cutting Balloons” (2006) and they are just so different. I will keep my ears open to see where this leads.

    My initial impressions:

Tab The Band kicks ass. Great classic rock sound!

White Hinterland is cool and loungey; like an updated Vince Guaraldi tune. Very nice.

XYZ Affair: a bit like weezer and the killers doing hooligan chants. The Marc Summers and old nickelodeon cameos are sure to be a hit with the Gen Y camp. I predict mainstream success for these guys.

Cassettes Wont Listen is by far the most interesting one of the bunch. Loved the quiet piano interspersed with the guitars and electronic sounds. Looking forward to his upcoming album in March.

King of Prussia: accessible, catchy, kinda reminds me of a more capable Franz Ferdinand.

Mars Volta: never been a big fan, but I like this single, pretty funky.

Heavy Circles: Very nicely done, but would like to hear more from this duo.

Broken Family Band: nice song, but a bit unimpresive.

    Great mix of bands, Rusty.

Great mix of tunes to listen to. Digging the throwback sound of Tab the Band, the the spaciness of the Cassettes and Heavy Circles. The Broken Family Band is pretty cool too.
