We Yes You No: Music for Beginners
By: Charbarred | in: Music |There’s an air of mystery to art rockers We Yes You No. Everything about them is shrouded in secrecy. When reading about them you’ll be hard pressed to find any substantial information other than the fact that they have have a cruel sense of humor. Is their singer really a 6′1 vegan, who studied experimental music composition at university? Probably…Is their guitarist’s name really Nemo? Not really. Their debut album Music for Beginners is as musically baffling, but in a good way.

The current music scene in England either calls for angular riffs played to perfection or tired 4 chord progressions accompanied by overly done British accents. We Yes You No, know better than to fall into this trap. Trends come and go, but these guys want to make real music. Music For Beginners is anything but music for beginners. The compositions recall the days when song-writing was not considered something you do in the 5 minutes you have to kill between gigs. Some of the songs sound like French chansons from the days of past, while others just try and push the boundaries of song-writing.

You’d think that with such a high level of writing the band would be content to just put some strings and sparse chords behind everything and call it day. But Music for Beginners is all about high art. Not the annoying kind where everyone just tries too hard, but the subtle kind where things are tastefully put in place. You won’t find one chord played on the album. The backing tracks are beautifully put together with every band member simply caressing the song with inventive quirks.

Stating Deerhoof, Blonde Redhead and The Flaming Lips as influences, the band lives up to its inspiration. You won’t find catchy singles to drive to with your roof open on a warm summer day. You will, however, find a very satisfying musical creation you can re-visit on a rainy day. It may take a few listens, but who knows, you may unravel a few mysteries on the way.
Music for Beginners is due to hit the stores in September. For the time being, you can get it directly from the band on their site.

Sounds like someone’s been going through their older brother’s DEVO albums.
